Lombok is an island in the West Nusa Tenggara between Bali to the west and Sumbawa to the east. The most famous city is Kuta Lombok, especially for surfers who are looking for new waves and not so crowded places. But there is way more to do than just surf, Lombok has beautiful beaches, hiking tours to the volcano Mount Rinjani or cultures explorations as e.g. Sade village.
There are different ways to travel to the island. From Padang Bay, you can take the ferry with your scooter for 130’000 Rupiah (CHF 10.-!!). We went on the ferry overnight and it took us approximately 5 hours to arrive. There are cabins or mattresses you can rent, or you can just lay down on sits. Most people go by plane as the flights are cheap as well and maybe it’s even more comfortable.
The streets in Lombok are like back home in Switzerland and traffic is way better than in Bali. People call Lombok “an unspoiled Bali” or “Bali 10 years before”. Anyway, there will be a lot of changes in the next coming years. In Kuta Lombok, the constructions for the Motor GP in 2021 are going wild. You can see a lot of land sales posters and feel how people are preparing for this immense event. Nevertheless, Lombok’s sunsets are magical, and people are very friendly. For everyone who needs a break from crowded places and traffic, we can recommend visiting.
The Gili Islands are three different sand islands in the north of Lombok. The islands are called Gili Trawangan, Meno and Gili Air. On all islands it is not allowed to drive with your scooter or car, so you will get very active and you will explore all hot spots, also seated but this time on a bicycle. Gili Trawangan is famous for their party and diving spots. On the Meno and Gili Air you can find a lot of freshly married couples who are enjoying their honeymoon. So, if you travel on your own you will find more fun on Trawangan. There are a lot of cheap hostels and it is very easy to connect with people from everywhere. For those who still want to explore the other islands, it takes just about 20 – 30 minutes to jump from one to another. Another option is to visit Lombok who is just about 1 hour with the ferry away. All of them have their own charm they are small but beautiful!
Last weekend I took the opportunity to see the temple called Tirta Empul. This is a place where you can purify your soul. Balinese people have been coming to this spot for more than 1000 years to wash the bad energy away. It’s still a very popular Tempel for ritual purification. The water flows directly from the Pakerisan River and its made from stones. Indra, a Hindu god created this magical Temple. You’ll get a sarong to wear and you have to put all of your clothes off. It’s very important to follow all of the instructions and rules.
When you get in the water, I felt different. It was a feeling I never had before. I was overwhelmed because of this magical moment. At this moment, you will forget the 1000 other persons right behind you.
The ritual is: to say a prayer before you wash your head 3 times per each water bubbler. You can also bring offerings and flowers with you. That was what I did. In the end, I felt like I was taking part in something truly special.
